After sunset, you can stand on the edge of one of the cornfields in the Bosque del Apache and witness thousands of sandhill cranes take flight in small family groups, soaring over the tree line toward the ponds for an overnight roost.
If you look closely, you can see the texture at the bottom of this photograph is comprised of hundreds of cranes trilling and bellowing in the soft twilight. I am so lucky to live so close to these feathered creatures during the winter season.
