Sunrays Through Pueblo Bonito

The gate of heaven is very low; only the humble can enter it.

– Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton

This is the first of several shots I’ll be sharing from my short trip to Chaco Canyon, the prehistoric home of the Anasazi Indians. This particular ruin is called Pueblo Bonito–named by a Spaniard who was one of the first to investigate and document the location.

Chaco, which means “shallow” in Spanish, was built in a long canyon with walls that stand only about 300 feet high on either side. The canyon stretches east to west and contains several ancient dwellings, the oldest of which date back 5000 years. Truly, this is a site which in on par with the pyramids of ancient Egypt. And yet, so few people know about it in comparison.

I hope to find time to write more about this spellbinding location in future posts. In the interest of getting my images “out there” I hope to leave you with a sense of curiosity about this magical location, and a glimmer of wonder.
